Corn Snakes: Creating the Best Enclosure

Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes

Corn snakes are one of the most popular pet snakes in the US.

It’s easy to see why: calm demeanor, relatively small bodies, and easy to care for.

They can even live over 20 years under the right care!

In this post, we discuss the corn snake’s natural habitat, typical behaviors, and tips for setting up the ideal corn snake enclosure.

The Corn Snake’s Natural Habitat

Corn snakes are native to North America, most commonly found in the southeastern US.

They’re adaptive reptiles but thrive in temperate climates. They’re often found in wooden groves, rocky areas, and meadowlands.

Behavior and Temperament

Corn snakes are diurnal, so they’re most active during the day.

They’re a ground-dwelling species, so you’ll find them in caves or nestled under rocks, logs, and bushes. They climb into trees once in a while, but they prefer to do most of their activities on the ground level.

As for temperament, corn snakes are active hunters in the wild but are not typically aggressive towards people, which speaks to their popularity as pets.

Corn Snake Enclosure Requirements

A full-grown corn snake can reach around 5 feet, so they need ample space to stretch and roam around.

If you start with a smaller enclosure for a baby corn snake, make sure you size up accordingly.

We have a Vision Cage for every step of the way:

  • Baby Corn Snake: The Model 221 [12″H x 28″L x 22″D]
  • Juvenile Corn Snake: The Model 332 [21″H x 36″L x 23″D]
  • Adult Corn Snake: The Model 433 [28″H x 48″L x 28″D]

Temperature in a Corn Snake Enclosure

Your reptile enclosure will require a temperature gradient consisting of a cool side, a warm side, and a basking spot.

Also, decrease the light and temperature at night to mimic the typical day-night schedule.

  • Cool Side: 75°-80°
  • Warm Side: 80°-85°
  • Basking Spot: 88°-92°
  • Ambient Night Time Temperature: 75°

Regularly measure internal temperatures to ensure your pet’s enclosure is a comfy one. Use a tool like our 1000-watt thermostat and probe.

Humidity for Corn Snakes

Maintain an internal humidity between 40 – 50%, and measure it with a humidity gauge in your snake’s enclosure.

The corn snake is a ground-dwelling species that loves to burrow, so the proper substrate is vital.

We recommend a mixture of bark and soil to mimic their natural habitat, such as this ZooMed bark-based substrate, which retains moisture and allows for burrowing.

Avoid fine and scented substrates such as cedar or pine shavings. These materials contain certain oils and chemicals that irritate the skin and cause respiratory issues in corn snakes.

Finishing Up

Corn snakes, native mostly to the eastern US, are one of the most popular pet snakes.

They’re docile, generally easy to care for, and they look so cool!

Just like any pet, a lot of care and commitment are required to keep them healthy. With the right home and proper tools, your pet corn snake can live a long and happy life.
